Last Time The Red Wings Missed the Playoffs

With the Detroit Red Wings’ (38-27-15) loss in overtime to the Pittsburgh Penguins Wednesday night, no one really cared about the loss. That’s because it gained the Wings the one point they needed to get into the playoffs for the 23rd consecutive year.

23 years. That’s a long time. The last time the Wings didn’t make the playoffs the year was 1990 (1989-90 season). Things were a little different back then, so here’s a nostalgic walk down memory lane for everyone to enjoy.

1990

Record of the Year: “Wind Beneath my Wings” by Bette Midler

Oscar for Best Movie: Dances with Wolves

U.S. President: George H.W. Bush

Big names in the NHL: Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier

Big names in sports: Michael Jordan, Barry Sanders

Stanley Cup: Edmonton Oilers over Boston Bruins

NBA Championship: Detroit Pistons over Portland Trail Blazers

World Series: Oakland Athletics over San Francisco Giants

Super Bowl XXIV: San Francisco 49ers over Denver Broncos

The Scandals: Milli Vanilli lip-synching. Need I say more? Also, there was something about Chuck Berry watching ladies pee.

Tops at the Box Office: A stacked line-up with Home Alone, Ghost, Pretty Woman, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Total Recall and Die Hard 2. Crazy.

Top Musical Acts: Paula Abdul and Michael Bolton and I feel old.

Wow. Remember when the Red Wings used to be bad and the Pistons were actually good?

Congrats Red Wings on your 23 straight postseason appearances. It’s been a long, very-well deserved run.
