Nashville Predators star goaltender Pekka Rinne will be sidelined for about a month following surgery on his left hip due to an infection. Rinne has started in 9 of the Predators 10 games this season going 4-4-1 with a 2.31 GAA and a .931 save percentage. In his absence the Predators will rely on rookie Carter Hutton, a U-Mass Lowell product who has spent the last few years in the AHL. Hutton has provided solid service thus far posting a 1-0-0 record in 2 games played and stopping 38 of 39 shots in a 3-1 win over Winnipeg on October 20th.
The Predators have also recalled 22 year old goaltender Magnus Hellberg from their AHL team.
Hellberg has a 1-2-0 record with a 2.23 GAA and .913 save percentage for the Milwaukee Admirals this year. Hutton beat out Hellberg for the backup spot this year in training camp. The Predators have high hopes for their 2011 2nd round pick. Like Rinne and Anders Lindback, who was traded to the Tampa Bay, Lightning, he’s a big European goaltender (6’5 – 200 lbs). Hellberg spent one season in the Swedish Elite League prior to joining the Milwaukee Admirals in 2012-2013.
